What Is Epilepsy?

           What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder characterized by recurrent seizures. Seizures occur when neurons in the brain misfire.

Some patients may have auras prior to the seizure which may consist of the following: changes in smell, sound, taste, vision, fear, nausea, déjà vu, and others.

During the seizure, patient may stare off into space, have convulsions, or display other complex motor movements. Epilepsy can have numerous causes some of which include genetics, stroke, tumor, developmental abnormalities, metabolic disturbances, and reaction or withdrawal to medications. However, many times we do not know the reason. EEGs are often done to identify and better characterize the seizure. Sometimes this may also require ambulatory or inpatient monitoring. MRI of the brain is often done to rule out some of the causes mentioned in the above. Blood work and a physical examination is also necessary during the evaluation. Most patients respond well to medications and can live a normal life. When they are more severe, several medications may be required. Surgery and vagal nerve stimulation are more invasive methods used for patients with aggressive symptoms.

Fatigue And Body Pain – Where Is It Coming From?

Body fatigue and pain can come from neurological fatigue, which is caused by the lack of proper functioning of the brain and its accompanying nerves.

This type of fatigue occurs when the neurotransmitters, responsible for coordinating our thoughts and movements, become impaired. Commonly. neurological fatigue may be caused by sleep deprivation, stroke, or other serious medical conditions. Additionally, medications, such as, ironically, antidepressants, can also contribute to this.

Physiological fatigue occurs when the body’s energy stores become depleted. This is often related to strenuous physical activities or prolonged bouts of intense physical activity such as running or weight-lifting for extended periods of time. If the body does not get the the right amount, and the right type of necessary replenishment, it will eventually be affected by what is known as ‘muscle fatigue’ which can impair physical and mental performance.

Additionally, prolonged mental effort can also lead to this type of fatigue. Healthier habits can eliminate these types of issues, and I also know how to help you break out of patterns that deplete you – and guide you into sustainable ways of feeling better.

Your blood glucose stability – AKA your blood sugar – is a common link to other health issues that can make all the difference. This is something we can control, and it’s commonly overlooked.

I sometimes take all I have seen, solved, and learned in the medical field for granted. As a neurologist, patients seem surprised when I ever link neurological disorders to nutritional deficits or food allergies as potential root causes.

Dr Mian Does Neurology Different

There are three main specializations of neurology, and Dr. Mian is the fourth.

           First, there’s General Neurology.

These neurologists diagnose and treat a range of conditions such as

           , and nerve issues.

           Second, there’s Specialized Neurology.

These neurologists have expertise in specific areas such as

           stroke

           ,

           Parkinson’s

            or other movement disorders.

           Third, there’s Pediatric Neurology.

These neurologist specialize in treating infants and young children with a wide variety of neurological issues.

Fourth, there’s Dr. Fawad Mian. Dr. Mian is a very experienced neurologist with areas of expertise in most everything above, but he also veers off into non-traditional care plans. He spends time with his patients asking questions and listening carefully, and he gets to know his patients in a holistic fashion. He accepts most insurance, so you’ll find he covers all the traditional bases while he’s running assessments and testing, but you’ll also find that he offers

non-traditional treatment plans that are not covered by insurance

. Very often, it’s these very non-traditional and non-invasive treatment plans that solve debilitating and life-long issues. Functional and regenerative medicine happens to be Dr. Mian’s favorite part of his neurological practice.

No matter how you slice it, when medical specialists are allowed to offer individualized treatment plans, they spend time listening to their patients, and they are allowed to integrate non-insurance-covered therapies into their treatment plans, that’s when the treatment outcomes tend to succeed. There’s fundamental flaws with traditional insurance treatment plans that Dr. Mian does not let limit his fully integrated approach.

Mixing traditional “covered” doctor visits, assessments and tests, with non-traditional, non-covered visits is not easy to navigate for anyone involved, that’s why Dr. Mian came up with the model of establishing his

Nothing on the ProloHealing side of Dr. Mian’s practice is covered by insurance but the model accomplishes three things:

Patients are assured that the usual offerings on the NeuroWellnessMD side of his practice are covered by insurance, and they are incorporated into care plans when it’s best for his patients.

Patients know when something is offered on the ProloHealing side of things, those treatments are not covered by insurance. But, patients are getting access to extraordinary treatments such as Emerald green laser lipo (for fat and weight loss), and PRP (for pain, hair restoration, sexual health, and headaches). These therapies such as the Emerald Laser and his advanced uses of PRP, offer high-potential solutions for body and joint pain, reversing aging, and help patients lose weight and get on healthier and happier paths, with natural remedies, and without surgery.

You have one specialist, Dr. Fawad Mian, who gets to know his patients well, and is passionate about solving issues in the most speedy and natural fashion possible.

This can be the menisci or the shock absorbers in your knee, the cartilage surrounding your femur or even the cartilage behind your knee cap.
Build Muscle, Lose Fat

As we age, we tend to lose muscle mass over time. According to the National Institute of Health, we lose 3-8% our muscle mass per decade which than accelerates after the age of 60. Losing muscle mass as time goes on leads to falls , fractures, and disability. It’s imperative that we maintain and work on it. The added benefit of maintaining muscle is burning fat and calories.

Losing muscle mass as time goes on leads to falls , fractures, and disability. It’s imperative that we maintain and work on it. The added benefit of maintaining muscle is burning fat and calories.

Muscle is more metabolically active and burns more calories. Muscles to target would include, chest, arms, and thighs as they are bigger muscles. Muscle takes up less room and makes you look leaner when you work on it.

To put on the muscle, you must add in good quality protein and a sufficient amount of it. It is typically said that you need 0.8g/kg of body weight. If you are active you will need more. Something that you can do at home, try to take in 30gm of protein at breakfast. This can be done with food and/or protein shakes. This will help with your weight, glucose control, as well as feeling full longer.

Make sure you are doing resistance training to help build that muscle. Aim for 3 to 4 times a week. Cardio is great but don’t let that be the only type of exercise you do.
